Seven alleged members of German far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
